Biology 1A

Course Description

This course will provide students with an overview of biology- the study of living things. It provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of life as they apply to both plants and animals. It will also provide students the opportunity to study inter-relationships of plants and animals with their environment. This course will fully prepare students for Biology 1B in which Genetics and Evolution are studied and related back to concepts covered in Biology 1A. Upon completion of this course students will show proficiency in course learning standards and daily targets outlined by the Next Generation Science Standards; as measured by classwork, participation, homework, projects, and tests.

Unit Schedule*:

Unit 1 Ecology (Ecosystems)

Unit 2: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Unit 3: DNA and Protein Synthesis

Unit 4: Cell Division and Differentiation

*For individual schedules and standards/learning goals for units- see calendars glued into spiral notebooks and on the class webpage*

Biology Week 3

Good Morning,

Just a quick note about this week's lessons and important dates to keep in the back of your mind for the coming week.

This week Mon.9/19-Fri. 9/23 will be a typical week with lessons Mon.-Thurs. and a quiz on Friday. Next week we will finish up the lessons for Unit 1: Ecology; as well as beginning to prepare for the upcoming Test.

Students will be given the unit study guide next Thursday 9/29.On the day of the test, students can turn in their completed study guide for 10 points extra credit; I hope all students take advantage of this opportunity. The following day 9/30 we will be playing a review game as a class and their test will be on Monday 10/3. I know this date is still 2 weeks away, but it is important that students keep this in their mind and keep their notebook up to date.

Students' InterActive Notebooks pages 1-37 will be turned in the day of the test and graded. Students should have all notes completed, inquiry statements and a summary for every lesson, and their output page assignment completed with at least 4 colors on the days where something was drawn. It is easy to do well on the notebook and get a good grade, but it is also easy to slack off and have the notebook grade bring down their overall grade. I encourage students to check in with me this week or early next week, if they are unsure about whether their notebook work is meeting the requirements.

Recapping here are the key dates to remember:
Friday 9/23: Quiz 2 over pages 25-31
Thursday 9/29: Study guide and vocab practice day
Friday 9/30: Review Game
Monday 10/3: Unit 1 Test, Study guide due, and IAN pages 1-37 due.

Please call or email me with any questions! Have a great week!

Welcome to Biology 1A

Good Morning Parents and Students!

I hope that you all had an enjoyable summer and that the transition back to school hasn't been a difficult one. I am writing to introduce myself to you, my name is Hannah Andrews and I have been teaching at CMC for 3 years. Whether I have had you or your student in my class before or if you are brand new, I want to welcome you! We are going to have a great school year together!

This year I will be teaching Health and Biology and both classes will be using a sprial notebook for the majority of their course work. It is imperative that your student stays on top of the assignments given because this notebook really will be their tool to success in this class. The notebook is called an InterActive Notebook which is a teaching and learning tool which utilizes both hemispheres of the brain to help students learn. The notebook becomes a portal for teacher input (notes, worksheets, etc) and student output (creative interpretations of the material). Each student will learn how to set up their notebook in the coming school days; so I encourage you to ask them about it as they get more comfortable with the format!

Be sure to subscribe to my class pages for reminders and assignments that I post. To access this from the CMC website, hover over the "Students" tab at the top of the page; then click on "Classes/Homework". Find my class under the science tab and click the "subscribe" button to stay up to date on the important things I post!

Lastly, I would like to invite all parents and students to join the Remind App and receive free texts or emails from my class. Remind is a safe way for students, parents, and teachers to be in contact with each other without knowing anyone's personal contact information. I use remind in my classroom to send reminders about upcoming tests, assignments, or to tell students what pages to study for quizzes. You can choose to sign up and receive messages via text, email, or in the app itself. I highly encourage you (if you haven't done so already) to join my classes.

To subscribe via text simply send the following class code @cmcbi as a message to the phone number 81010.

Alternatively to sign up via email, head to www.remind.com/join and enter the class code and then your email address.

I look forward to teaching your students and having a great term. Please feel free to contact me if you ever need anything or want to check in on your students' progress. I am always available via email: [email protected] and I am in my classroom for office hours from 7:45-8:45 and 2:45-3:45 most school days.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Andrews
