Description
This course is designed to enhance your experience in the Pathways Program.  Through academic advisement, learning about resources at CCC and beyond, group discussion, and peer support you will be provided with a structured environment to assist you in making the transition to attending college at Clackamas Community College. You will be encouraged to use critical thinking skills to set goals and make responsible decisions regarding academics, career planning, and social relationships. The course will also explore the purpose of higher education and your role in the college environment.

Part I – Planning & Preparation for Next Term (30 points)

Part II – Informational Interview Write-Up (45 points)

In a Google Doc, complete a two-page paper (typed, double-spaced, 12-pt font, share with me upon completion) that includes the following information:

  • The name of the person you interviewed, their career field, their current position and employer.
  • How you found the person you interviewed (i.e., family/friend connection, internet search, etc) Include contact information (phone number or email address)
  • A summary of the questions you asked and the responses/information they provided to you.
  • What did you learn about whether this career/occupation would be a match with your skills, interests, and personality style? What did you discover that you would need in order to be successful in this career/occupation/field? Any surprises?
  • What else do you plan to do to find out about this occupation to further explore that it’s a fit for you? What other sources of information could you utilize to gather this information? Be specific!

  3. In a Google doc, thoroughly summarize your understanding of the CEO expectations below using lecture notes from class and the attached documents (CEO Contract, CCC Textbook Policy, CMC Academic Standing Policy). Summary should be at least 2 pages double spaced. Assignment is worth 50 points!

  1. Read pages 22 - 27 in “What Color Is Your Parachute?”
  2. Complete the Career Assessment.
    1. Make sure to select “Take a Longer Assessment” at the bottome of the page.
    2. Answer the questions as quickly and honestly as you can.
    3. Click on “Done! See Results.”
    4. Click on “Download PDF.”
    5. Email me your results as an attachment.
    6. Print out a copy of your results to bring to class on Oct. 28th.
  3. In a Google doc, write a 1 page reflection regarding your Career Assessment results. Answer the following questions in your reflection:
    1. What is your Holland code type according to the Career Assessment results?
    2. Did any possible career matches come up that interest you? What are they?
    3. Choose 2 titles that came up from the career assessment or two that are associated with your Holland code that interest you. In order to pursue these careers, what kind of education (degree or training program, certificates, etc) do you need? Approximately how long would it take to enter into the career and what kinds of entry-level tasks or experiences can do you in the meantime to help prepare you for this field.

  1. Read pgs. 5-21 in Parachute book.
  2. Complete the Self-Knowledge Test (Handed out in class).
  3. Review the Information Interview video, read BLS Informational Interviewing article (attached) and pgs 37-53 (Chapter 4) in your Parachute book to prepare for your Informational Interview.
  4. Complete the Informational Interviewing Worksheet Google Doc.

  • Save it as “LastNameFirstInitial - Info Interview Worksheet.”
  • Go to “File” and “Move” your copy where you want it on your Google drive.

Ideas for what to ask are in the "200 Great Informational Interview Questions" document (attached).  A complete write up of your informational interview will be due as part of your final for this class (Due 12/2).

Following Assignments Due BEFORE Class on Friday, Oct. 7th!!!
  1. Share your syllabus with a parent or guardian and complete the Syllabus Signature Sheet.
  2. Share your Pathways to College Contract with your parent or guardian. Turn in your signed (student and parent) Contract.
  3. Complete the Contact Information Form.
  4. Complete the one question Career Interest Survey.
  5. Write a 1 ½ to 2 page typed reflection paper on the "7 Strange Questions" article read in class. Choose a focus: 1) Select 2 to 3 topics in the article that caught your attention. Reflect on why they caught your attention and how they do relate to you OR 2) Answer each of the 7 questions from your point of view.
  6. Register for this class in MyClackamas following the Express Registration steps (see attached). Your EL-120-CMC03 section Synonym (CRN) is 273453. Registration opens on Monday, Oct. 3rd.
  • Log in to MyClackamas
  • Click on “Registration” on left-hand side
  • Click “Express Registration”
  • In the Synonym column (1st box, 1st line), enter the course registration numbers (CRN) and click “Submit” at the bottom.
  • On the next page under the Action drop down box, click “RG-Register”, then click “I Agree” at the bottom.
  • Make sure the requests were processed by checking your schedule for that term under “Account Information” and “Class Schedule” for the term you are working on scheduling.
