Lesson for Thursday 12/3- Topic Choice & Lateral Reading in Google Classroom

Lesson for Thursday 12/3- Topic Choice & Lateral Reading

Hello my friends! You may recall that I am at an online teacher conference all day today, so our lesson has been laid out for you here.

You have TWO tasks. The first one should be quick, the second one is more involved and will probably take about 30 minutes.

1) Go to the Google Form and tell me what your ideas are for a topic for your final presentation.
-The presentation will be like a streamlined version of an essay, with one slide for each paragraph.
-You will give your presentation to a small group during class time.
-These presentations are Argumentative (not just Informational). You will need to have a claim and find evidence to support it, just like we have been practicing.
-If you have NO IDEA what you want to research about, try going to Newsela and just browsing some headlines. What's happening in the world right now? What are people talking about?

2) You are going to learn more about how to do research like a pro. All of the directions (including videos) are on the Google Doc attached here (each student has their own copy).

P.S. I also added the two video links separately if you can't open them from the Google Doc.

This Peer Review, including your paragraph revision, is due by class time on Thursday.

Apply your Scoring Smarts to your own essay in Google Classroom

Apply your Scoring Smarts to your own essay

1) Look at your rubric for the Activism Essay. What scores did you get in those two categories that we've been focusing on today? (Provide Sufficient Reasons and Evidence and Integrate Reliable Sources)
2) Look back at your body paragraphs. Why do you think you got the scores you did? Be specific. You can even copy and paste a portion of your essay to help explain.

Voting Rights- Research in Google Classroom

Voting Rights- Research

Your next essay prompt is: Do you think the voting age should be lowered?
These are the three articles you will use to for evidence to support your argument in response to this question.
Please read them, highlight main idea sentences in green, and supporting details in pink. Highlight at least one of each color in each of the three articles.
There is a video here to help you with this.

Further Research, and Note-catcher in Google Classroom

Further Research, and Note-catcher

It's time to do a little more research! We started by reading in a very general way about activism. Now you can dive in a little deeper on a more specific aspect of activism.
The Newsela link below is to the same text set from last week. This time, you may choose to read 2-3 articles, based on what you think will help you prove your claim.

Due:

Activism, Protest, and Change Text Set in Google Classroom

Activism, Protest, and Change Text Set

Follow the link below to our text set in Newsela. There are 23 articles in there, all about examples of activism.
1. Read 4 articles.
2. Use the "Note-catcher" graphic organizer to track your learning as you read.
P.S. I would like you to choose a variety; there are activism examples from history, and from around the world, as well as Black Lives Matter, The Sunrise Movement (about climate change), and #Never Again (about school shootings), so try to have each article be from a different one of those categories. Thanks!
