Technology at Clackamas Middle College

CMC Community,

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we are excited to continue building on our commitment to providing a safe, consistent, and effective learning environment for all students. To that end, it is important to know our technology practices that we believe will significantly enhance educational experience for members of the CMC Community.

To foster student learning, well-being, and belonging by reducing distractions and promoting a healthy, focused school environment, Clackamas Middle College, will restrict the use of personal electronic devices during instructional time.  When students enter a classroom at Clackamas Middle College, they must place their personal electronic device in an assigned pouch.  A personal electronic device means any portable, electrically powered device that is capable of:

    • Making and Receiving Calls
    • Making and Receiving Text Messages
    • Accessing the Internet independently from the school's network infrastructure

This includes devices such as cell phones, smartphones, smartwatches, and other portable, internet-enabled devices capable of texting, calling, or accessing the internet independently.  Personal Electronic Devices do not include laptop computers or other technology explicitly required to support academic instruction or learning accommodations.

If a student refuses to place a personal electronic device in the assigned pouch, then the student will be expected to check it in directly to one of the following: teacher, head secretary, or administrator.

Exemptions exist for students using a personal electronic device for: a medical necessity (when use is part of a care or treatment plan ordered by a licensed medical provider), Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or Section 504 Plans (when use is required for access or accommodation).

The policy excludes the following times for students: passing time, lunch time, after school, not on school grounds, and not under the supervision of school personnel, except for supervision provided by a school bus driver. If personal electronic devices become a problem during any of the situations mentioned above, CMC School Personnel reserves the right to check in student devices to avoid a disruption in learning.

We are confident that this change will lead to a productive learning environment as we look forward to a successful school year in 2025-26.

Have a great school year!
