Macbeth Viewing Guide Assignment
Handout to go with Shakespeare Uncovered video. Written response on a separate piece of paper or typed. Chose one bullet point question from each section and write a paragraph for each.
Answer to bonus question on exam: TIRESIAS- the blind prophet from Thebes!
Polanski's portrayal of the old witch is a direct reference to the blind clairvoyant prophet of Apollo, who appears in such famous works as Homer's The Odyssey and the plays of Sophocles. (If you read Antigone last year, you might recognize the name!) According to Robert Graves, the author of The Greek Myths, "Tiresias" was a common name for soothsayers throughout Greek legendary history. Polanski's vision of the eldest witch shows the inspiration of Greek drama with her obvious blindness and mask-like visage. Tiresias is famous for turning into a woman for seven years, so the allusion makes further sense as an artistic decision by the director.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: The Weird Sisters
What mythological allusions ( allusion: a reference, suggestion of, mention of, to hint at) could Shakespeare be making with the three witches in Macbeth? Consider various world mythologies (most likely Shakespeare would be familiar with European and Classical Greek/Roman) and draw some parallels to these characters. Collect a few images to go along with your explanation.

“Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”
vHas there ever been a time in your life when someone told you that something improbable would happen and it did? Did the fact that the event was “predicted” cause you to behave differently than you would have otherwise? Or did the event simply seem to occur without any assistance from you? Recall the event, and include your feelings about the prediction and occurrence.
