Hello. Hope everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving break!

The YTA TWO class is engaged in a classwide service learning project at this time. As a class, we have adopted two families for the holidays. We are collected donations in the form of non-perishable food and money. In order to raise money we have set up a snack table at lunch. The class is selling baked goods, packaged snacks, candy, drinks, and cup of noodles. We are compiling a list of the exact items we need to send home to CMC families next week. We are very excited about this project and are working hard to make it a success.

In SENIOR SEMINAR we began a new unit on "Working in Oregon". During our last class we started learning background information about employment classification systems, wage categories, and job vacancies in our state. The class made predictions about the information that was presented. We will go through a powerpoint next class that was developed from a workshop I attended by the state Labor Department. Outside of class all students should be placed at their internships and completing the corresponding internship assignments for their portfolios.

There are assignments due in 2 of my classes:

ART- Everyone was given an essay "Pop Art- A Movement in the Sixties", and 9 corresponding questions. They were due before we left for the break, however, only a few people turned them in. They are now due Monday when we return to class. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about the assignment.

YTA ONE- Complete outlines for your research paper are due on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd at the beginning of class. Also, all research for your paper should be on notecards and in your folder. We will begin your rough drafts in class.

Here is an overview of what we have been covering in class:

Art-
We are finishing up color theory. For 2nd period Monday, Sept. 29 was the last work day for your color concept masterpiece. For 4th period (due to an oversight in supplies), most of you haven't started your masterpiece. We will start Wednesday. Speaking of which, that is the big day for the quiz. Good Luck!
Next unit: Secessionism, featuring Gustav Klimt

YTA 1-
We are starting our research projects. We brainstormed possible social issues, and students started selecting the issue they will be researching & subsequently serving. In upcoming classes we will learn research techniques & further our internet-based research.

YTA 2-
We are reviewing some essentials of citizenship. Students are also completing an assignment based on the recent Time magazine issue devoted to national service. The culminating assignment is a letter to either presidential candidate expressing support or criticism of the candidate's plan for national service.

Senior Seminar-
We have discussed the Career Related Learning Standards & the project component of their internships. Students have been given ample time in class to research potential internships, contact sites, & complete preliminary portfolio assignments.

School has begun!

It was great to see everyone. There are a lot of new faces and I'm excited to get to know all of you. I have a part of a song by Joni Mitchell to share that I hope helps inspire us to do our best this year.

Everything comes and goes
Pleasure moves on too early
And trouble leaves too slow
Just when you're thinking
You've finally got it made
Bad news comes knocking
At your garden gate
Knocking for you
Constant stranger
You're a brute-you're an angel
You can crawl-you can fly too
It's down to you
It all comes down to you

Life is short & we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who walk the way with us. So, be swift to love & make haste to be kind...

The author of this quote is currently unknown to me. I found it in an obituary a few years ago. A woman was cross-stitching it when she passed away. It has stuck with me as good words to live by (even if I can't follow them all the time).

Good luck with the upcoming school year. I am very excited to see everyone again!
