Speech and MTH 111

Hi there!

Since speech and pre-calc are offered for college credit, I need to give you some sort of final. Since the weather disrupted us, I am offering open book, take home finals in both courses. I am posting them here and I will have them available when we return on January 5. They will be due on January 7.

Public Speaking - Extracurricular Opportunity

If you would like the chance to show your proficiency in a different way, I'm extending an extracurricular opportunity to you! This is completely optional, but it should be a lot of fun! It can also help show me that you can apply what we've learned this term.

On Saturday, December 6, 2008, a speech tournament will be held at Clackamas High School (where I am the assistant coach). You will have the opportunity to watch competitive speech and debate, and then write up a summary to show me what you have learned. This summary should include:
  1. what event you watched
  2. if it is a speaking event, list the different topics of the speeches, if it is a debate, write the topic that was being debated
  3. describe the positives and the negatives that you observed
  4. tell me what you learned from watching

The schedule is pasted below. The different events will be discussed in class.

SPEAKING EVENTS
8:00 - 9:15 Pattern A Round 1 (ADS, HI, Oratory, Prose and Impromptu)
9:15 - 10:30 Pattern B Round 1(ESL Interp, Expos, DI, Duo, Radio, Extemp, Poetry, Storytelling)
10:30 - 11:45 Pattern A Round 2 (see events listed for Pattern A above)
11:45 - 1:00 Pattern B Round 2 (see events listed for Pattern B above)
1:30 - 2:45 Pattern A Round 3 (see events listed for Pattern A above)
2:45 - 4:00 Pattern B Round 3 (see events listed for Pattern B above)
4:15 - 6:00 Finals

DEBATE EVENTS
8:00 - 9:45 Round 1 (CX, LD, Public Debate, Public Forum)
10:00 - 11:45 Round 2
12:00 - 1:45 Round 3
2:30 - 3:45 Round 4
4:00 - 5:45 Finals

Please see Ameena with questions about this! We will discuss it every day this week in class (briefly).
