Projects and Project Based Learning

What is Project Based Learning?

At Clackamas Middle College, Project Based Learning (PBL) is a student directed standards based approach to engaging students in the learning of content area information and skills. With Project Based Learning, the inquiry process starts with a guiding question and lends itself to collaborative projects that integrate multiple content areas within the curriculum. Questions are asked that direct students to encounter the major elements and principles of a discipline. This process promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and provides real life connections to discipline area content.

Benefits of PBL...

Evidence shows that PBL enhances the quality of learning and leads to higher-level cognitive development through student engagement with complex reality-based projects. It is also clear that PBL teaches students complex procedures such as planning and communicating ideas and processes. PBL provides a natural context for students to make connections between content and real life application within the students own community. Accomplishing these goals, however, requires time for both teachers and students to master the behaviors and strategies necessary for successful PBL.
