March 1, 2010
We are heading into the home stretch of the second trimester, and we are looking to finish up this term strong with state testing, finals in classes (both at the college and on our campus), and hopefully with the admittance of 11 strong cohort students to the college for spring trimester. The month of February presented itself with an opportunity to hold our first dance, market our school at the North Clackamas School District Parent Institute, and carry out a fundraiser to help promote awareness around teen depression and suicide.

In early February, Clackamas Middle College held its first ever dance for its students. Junior Mara Merklin did an outstanding job of organizing the dance during the last four months. She came to me for approval, and formed a committee of students to help plan the logistics etc… Mara and the planning committee were able to get the following donations: a venue, a DJ, special effects for the dance, decorations, and CMC was able to provide snacks and beverages. The event ran on the first Saturday of the month for 3 hours and 80+ people showed up to celebrate the first annual event. I want to personally congratulate Mara and the planning committee for organizing such a much needed event. We are hoping that this is the first of many opportunities for CMC students to celebrate with each other.
Another weekend in February allowed C MC to be present at the 6th Annual Parent Institute in order to present and educate the North Clackamas Community about our school. It was great to see that more and more attendees had heard of our program and the benefits it offers to students. We were able to sign up interested parents and in April/May, we will be hosting an open house for prospective students for the 2010-2011 school year. If you have a son/daughter who will be entering high school, or is in high school and are interested in CMC, please turn in your applications as the spots for next year are filling fast.
Last, but not least, our leadership class taught by our counseling intern, Katie Loewen, is holding a fundraiser which partners Clackamas Middle College, Clackamas Community College and Trillium Family Services to promote awareness around teen depression and suicide. The leadership class was able to get a representative from Trillium Family Services to present this important topic to our students to kick off the event. There will be an Awareness Walk to raise money for this cause on March 12th from 7-11pm at the Clackamas Community College track. All proceeds and donations will be given to Trillium Family Services for teen depression and suicide.
As always, make sure to check the calendar for events and information. We, at CMC, want to make sure we are providing a quality education and unique opportunities to each student who comes through our school.
Thanks and just one more trimester to go...
Respectfully,
Brian Sien
