As we move into the shortest month of the year there are a few things to highlight at Clackamas Middle College. We are excited to announce that we have opened a student store on campus, run and managed by our students. We also received notice from the Northwest Accreditation Commission of our full accreditation. We are also looking to begin our second round of state testing along with preparing for the online writing assessments. Last but not least, we will be hosting a financial aid night for parents to help with the process of securing funds for their sons/daughters.
In January, CMC officially opened its first student store campus. This store is run and managed by our students in both Youth Take Action and Senior Seminar classes. The students will begin by selling refreshments, snacks and lunch items, and will hopefully move to selling CMC memorabilia and school supplies. Students will take their experiences and apply them to their classes for optimal learning opportunities.
Also in January, Clackamas Middle College received a letter from the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) notifying us of our full accreditation for the 2011-2012 school year. This was accomplished through a report submitted to the Oregon State Advisory Committee (SAC), and then later to the Commission on Schools at their annual meeting in December. The next site visit will not be required until the 2015-2016 school year.
This month we will begin the second round of Oregon State Assessments in reading, science and math. Along with this we will prepare for the writing online test for the third consecutive year. At CMC, our staff works hard to prepare our students for all assessments. It has been a goal of ours to include all testing components along with college readiness skills in all classroom areas. These online tests should help make the testing process more accessible to all of our students. We are hoping that the hard work pays off.
The last thing to mention is that we will be offering a financial aid information evening in February for parents of students who are interested in continuing the college/university learning experience after CMC. We will be hosting this event on Thursday, February 9, 2012, from 6-7pm. Frankie Everett, an Assistant Director of the Financial Aid office of the Marylhurst University will present information about different ways of paying for the higher education: how to apply for financial aid, how to find and apply for grants and scholarships.
We continue to be excited as we watch our students pursue excellence both in our building and at Clackamas Community College. The staff at CMC is impressed with our students’ growth and is proud to be part of our students’ education.
As always, make sure to check the calendar for events and information. We, at CMC, want to make sure we are providing a quality education and unique opportunities to each student who comes through our school.
Thanks and have a wonderful new year.
Respectfully,
Brian Sien
