In order to graduate from Clackamas Middle College each student must complete a 40-hour internship and corresponding product. This requirement is aligned with senior projects required of all students in the North Clackamas School District. The purpose of the experience is to help make the transition from high school to the adult world easier for each student. This experience should help students develop valuable real world skills, determine the “best fit” between her or him and a career or trade, and gain a better understanding of her or his individual strengths and weaknesses.
Each of the following 5 main components must be passed in order to graduate:
- the internship
- hours
- portfolio
- product
- presentation
- a one-term 2 class a week seminar
Each student must spend 40 hours on-site with an adult known as a community consultant. An adult must be present at all times the student is completing hours.
While completing the hours the student will also complete a variety of assignments and reflections that will be important parts of their portfolio.
Also included in each portfolio will be such items as:
- a 5 page reflective essay on their experience
- self and community consultant evaluations
- an hour log
As their internship comes to a close each student will create a product that is tangible evidence of what she or he learned both at their internship and in their seminar. Finally, each student will give a 15 minute presentation on his or her experience.
